The Creatures Found In Battlestar Galactica

By Cathy E. Dach

There are novels, comics, video games, and of course, television shows, based around the original storylines and characters of Battlestar Galactica. Television viewers were the first to be introduced to the characters that move the plot of BG when the original series of that name was released in the 1970's. The popularity of the series has expanded massively since that time and now people all over the world are able to enjoy the latest television shows and games based on it. The fact that BG has been able to move into the gaming world is particularly interesting; game designers have included the majority of the key characters and creatures that are already familiar to fans of the series. What are some of the key aspects of these video games and what makes them unique in the modern gaming world?

The main storyline of Battlestar Galactica is about human colonists who have been forced to leave their planet because of a war with the robotic and evil Cylons. The BG game follows this concept with a design that distinguishes players and computer characters into one of these two factions. You can either be a Cylon or a Human at the start of the game; the choice is yours when making a character. This decision is a big one since it will permanently affect the way you control your character, the types of weapons and vehicles you will be able to use, and the specific skills that your character will be able to develop.

Most of the fights in your Battlestar Galactica game will pit you against either the Humans or the Cylon, depending on which side you have chosen to go with. Therefore you will normally find yourself fighting against your enemy faction but at times against other space creatures. You may need to fight some battles in space using your faction's fighter ships while other battles will take place on the ground using your character's abilities and items.

Social elements of online games are also found in BG games that are designed as massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's. Because you have to work along with other members of your faction you will often find that teaming up with other players is the best way to advance through the game.

Gamers can get to know the characters of Battlestar Galactica in an entirely new way thanks to video game developers. Being given the option to play as either Human or Cylon gives you an interesting choice in the game from the very start.
