With the world's two most popular consoles, the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360, constantly battling it out for top spot in the gaming world, Microsoft and Sony are being forced to come up with ever more tempting exclusives for the consoles. From casual sports games to high octane racing, absorbing adventure to hardcore war games, both manufacturers are offering some top titles this year.
A long awaited and exciting addition to the Xbox 360 line-up has to be Gears of War 3. Gears fans will have anticipated this latest instalment for some time now, but may not have anticipated the much improved online multiplayer interface and the more strategic approach to the game. Although it does promise to make you think, Gears of War 3 does not move far away from its high octane, bold and blatant roots, so fans will not be disappointed.
In reply to the hype for Gears, Playstation 3 games developers are releasing an explosion of top exclusive titles this season, with over 20 announced prior to the New Year and many more on the way. Many of these will build on existing popular games series or will revamp some of the PS1 and 2 classics which are sure to have gamers queuing to pre order.
One of the most anticipated Playstation 3 exclusives is Killzone 3, which promises to offer a new gameplay experience using the technology of the newly developed Playstation Move. Some of the overhauled classics older gamers will be looking forward to are The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus Collection, which will bring both games bang up to date with smoother graphics, a throbbing soundtrack and high definition excitement.
A triumph for Microsoft in 2010 had to be the Xbox 360 add on, the Kinect. The pre Christmas launch put it top of the most wanted list for Christmas presents across the globe, although some of the games to date have been less than engrossing and definitely aimed at the more casual market. 2011 exclusive dragon flying game, Project Draco, aims to change this with an engaging storyline and body gameplay that doesn't exhaust the player.
Another series add on, the latest in the Forza series, Forza 4, will have racing fans drooling as they anticipate the enhanced graphics, wider selection of vehicles and better multiplayer integration than before. Added to which the Kinect compatibility promises to add another dimension to the game, although thankfully, it will not be in a Joyride invisible steering wheel sort of way.
Playstation's answer to the Kinect, the Move is also seeing some exclusive releases this year, with Playstation Move Heroes offering users the chance to whip, grenade, blast and bowl their way through the levels.
Looking at the lists of exclusives from both consoles, its clear Xbox developers are going for quality over quantity... or are they? Most of the titles so far released are squarely aimed at the casual gaming market, with more emphasis on Kinect compatible titles than hardcore gaming pleasure. Maybe they are attempting to steal some of the Wii's casual fitness users away from Nintendo, or maybe they are just out of great ideas. So whether you're playing an Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3 this year, you can be guaranteed it'll at least compar eto this year's Nintendo Wii games.
