Effective Strategies for The Twitter DM (Direct Message) Autoresponder

By Jerremy Brown

When you think about Twitter, you have to think in terms of connections with people, and that really is where the web is moving toward, anyway. If you have not been using the Twitter autoresponder for contacting new follows to you, then you are not getting off to the best start than is possible. We have a few excellent guidelines you should know about, and they concern how to best use this autoresponder.

You will find a different kind of crowd at Twitter, depending on your niche of course, but generally speaking creating a professional impression is very much a good idea. Twitter dictates that you build connections with people, but you also have to be professional when you talk business, as well. The messages are short, as you know, and so it is very easy to ensure you have no spelling or grammar errors. So, this is one of those things where you can make a good impression by not having simple mistakes that make you just look a bit lazy.

Any time you give a link out in your messages, be sure you have something set up so you can track them. All kinds of URL shortener services exist, and so being able to do this is also free - just remember to check on the performance of your direct messages and links in Tweets. Everything needs to be tracked when you are talking about links, and the same holds true for the DM autoresponder, as well. Optimizing any kind of campaign through tracking is something that not enough businesses on the net bother to do. Just like any other campaign, you will identify something that works well, and then you will be able to learn a lot from that.

Remember the most important thing is building rapport, and so you actually want to write much less about your business or marketing, etc. This is really more of a heads-up about being sensitive and respectful of other peoples' time.

There's nothing worse than a direct message sent to a new follower that looks rude and cold. Go ahead and let them know that you look forward to talking with them in the main Twitter area. It really takes a lot to make someone so upset or annoyed they automatically un-follow you, but all kinds of things happen. It takes time for people to get comfortable with you and begin to trust what you say. You know what it means to be nice to someone in a situation where you really will not ever get to know them personally - it is easy to do. Always work to make a positive impression with your autoresponder messages, and you will be fine. It is easy to be different from so many others, and one example is with the Twitter DM autoresponder and using it as it was intended to be used. Creating a positive reputation for your self at Twitter is not hard to do with your audience, and part of doing that is with the quality of the value you give people.
