How To Compare Tablet PCs To Choose The Best For You

By Edward Tersumms

Choosing a tablet PC is a complex process. There are an ever growing number of tablet hardware options and different operating systems to choose from. It doesn't help that reviews and specifications are littered with jargon either.

Let's look at some of the questions to consider:

1) Is a tablet PC or a laptop right for you? a. Where would you be using it? b. Is mobility important - do you take many long journeys? c. How do the features of a tablet compare with those of a laptop?

Don't part with your money until you're clear on the answers to these questions.

How and where you want access to your PC will largely dictate what is best for you. A laptop is not as portable as a slate PC as they're heavier. But, they also offer a wider range of functions, more processing power and are much easier to create content on.

2) If you've decided that a tablet PC is right for you where do you go next?

Should you go for a 10-inch tablet or 7-inch?

A smaller screen 7-inch tablet computer format that fits in a jacket pocket or a 10-inch tablet that gives you a bigger screen so more space to enjoy web content or watch videos.

When will you be using the tablet PC?

Can you get away with only having a Wi-Fi tablet that you connect to a home network or Wi-Fi hotspot or do you need a 3G tablet computer that connects to a mobile network?

The importance of mobility and battery life?

Long journeys require a long battery life. Some more premium slate PCs give you up to 10 hours video playback on a single charge of the battery, others will run out of power in 2-3 hours. If you choose the wrong one for your needs then it will get frustrating very quickly

3) How to choose what operating system suits you best.

The user experience on the tablet computer is largely related to the power of the hardware mixed with the operating system capabilities. Do you want the slick iOS user interface of the iPad or the customised nature of Android. You may want to use all your Windows programmes so need a Windows slate PC. There are pros and cons of each so you need to understand the options.

4) Finally, you need to choose the tablet PC that has the features you want.

There are good and bad tablet computers available and a wide variety of price. tablet PC reviews exist that will give you a great deal of insight into what are the features, what performance each slate PC delivers and where you can save some money if you're prepared to trade-off some features.
